About us
What is RAG?
RAG stands for Raising and Giving. Sheffield RAG started out in 1920 as ‘Hospital Saturday’ where medical students raised funds for local hospitals.
Sheffield RAG is a working committee of students at Sheffield Students’ Union. We raise money and help other University of Sheffield students raise money for charities around Sheffield and South Yorkshire.
We organise lots of fundraising events over the academic year and all fundraising is completely student-led.
The RAG committee, and student groups we work with, choose exactly which events we want to run, and the charities that will benefit. Supported by a full time staff member, we aim to raise as much money as possible, and have a lot of fun in the process.

How does it work?
We raise money primarily through putting on a whole academic year of exciting fundraising events; everything from bake sales to bungee jumps.
Some of our main events are (list is non-exhaustive)
Spiderwalk – a 13 mile night hike through the Peak District
Baby Bummit – A charity hitchhike from Sheffield to another city in the UK
Big Bummit – A charity hitchhike from Sheffield to a country in Central Europe
Give As You Rent
Sleep Out To Speak Out – Sleeping overnight under the University concourse to raise awareness and funds for Sheffield’s homeless charities
RAG Week – seven days of events, working with societies and clubs across the University to raise money for charity
RAGvent – Sheffield RAG’s annual charity Christmas raffle with fantastic prizes up for grabs
Visit our events page for more information on upcoming and past events.
Our charities
We love the community that we become a part of as students, so we aim to donate 85% of our annual total to local charities in South Yorkshire and the North Derbyshire area. We like to make a difference to smaller charities who cannot afford to have large-scale fundraising programmes.
